On September 21, 2006, at the Clinton Global initiative in New York City, Sir Richard Branson announced that he plans on committing up $3B in funds over the next 10 years for combating global warming and developing renewable fuels. Virgin Fuels is the vehicle for the Virgin Group; implementing investment strategy in the sector and leading by example to propel people, nations and social organizations to increase the use of renewable energy. In addition to investments in production organizations, based on existing technologies, their focus will include early stage investments in research and development of new biofuels suitable for both ground transportation and aviation businesses.

Virgin Fuels has been established to invest up to $400mn in companies in the renewable energy and resource efficiency sectors in the US and Europe.
